Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

1st View
Format: XD
Venue: Tinseltown (Summer 2011)

I was absolutely blown away by RotPotA. It simultaneous remakes Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and ties together the entire franchise; retracing and better explaining certain elements. Loved it; probably my favorite movie of the Summer.

Timely for the end of the NFL lockout, here's my Junkfood Cinema tribute to this terrible, terrible sports film.

The Invisible Man (1933)

Revisit
Format: Netflix WI

Showed this to Luke as it was on Netflix. Still far and away my favorite of the Universal Monster movies. The effects, given the time in which it was made, are unbelievable.

100 Feet (2008)

Format: Netflix WI

Saw this a while back at a buddy's all-night horror marathon. Watched it again with Luke on a whim. Still pretty decent.

Vanishing Point (1971)

Still an awesome carsploitation film. The gleaming white Challenger is remarkably iconic and its driver Kowalski was the subject of my Reel Men column for Movies.com. Check it!

Corvette Summer (1978)

Had never seen this, watched it on a whim. Turns out Corvette Summer is a fantastic comedy featuring a young Mark Hamil in the midst of the Star Wars hullabaloo. Absolutely loved it! Here's a little article I wrote for Hollywood.com when this movie made me nostalgic for good ol' Mark.

Village of the Damned (1995)

One of the last remaining Carpenter films I hadn't seen. Arguably the first of his really shitty films, it definitely marked the beginning of his epic slump. Holy hell is this thing atrocious. Oi!

Rango (2011)

Format: Blu-ray
Venue: Rivendell

I had heard nothing but great things about this film, and I was stoked to see it. The animation is spectacular, the concept is unique, and the western and exploitation film reference machine seemed custom-made for me. But something, and I admit my lacking in not being able to pinpoint it, kept me from enjoying Rango. I felt like it was holding me at arms-length. I don't know, I wasn't terribly impressed.

Captain America (2011)

Revisit
Venue: Alamo Village

If I'm not mistaken, this is the first movie of this summer that I have seen twice in theaters; further testament to the greatness of Johnston's film. Captain America is my favorite Marvel movie since Iron Man.
