We Are the Night (2010)

I've heard people describe We Are the Night as the gender-flipped Near Dark...and those people are absolutely correct. So much of the plot behind this German vampire flick feels very reminiscent of Kathryn Bigelow's phenomenal 1987 horror classic. It's well shot, features great performances, and operates under some fascinating feminist ideals.

I love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost; two of the funniest guys working today. But Paul is flat, lazy, and desperately pandering. My theory on this is that Pegg and Frost were trying to recapture the greatness of their series Spaced, wherein a nonstop parade of geek culture references marches to the delight of a niche audience. But what they ended up proving is that it is unwise to remove Edgar Wright from the equation if you are hoping for the same result.

Pumpkinhead (1988)

One of my horror blind spots rectified! The thing that struck me the most about Pumpkinhead is how b-movie and exploitation-y it was. I was under the impression that the buzz around the film was that it was a legitimately "good" horror flick. While I still very much enjoyed it, Pumpkinhead is super cheesy. I will say it has one of the best practical monsters I have ever seen.

Unstoppable (2010)

Unbearable. As my pal Scott Weinberg said, someone needs to buy Tony Scott a tripod made of fucking stone. Obnoxious cinematography, unlikeable characters, and a thoroughly preposterous concept with zero impressive action sequences. What's to enjoy here?

Well-shot, starts very strong, sort of falls apart near the end...which should have occurred 20 minutes sooner than it was. Passable sequel to W.S. Anderson's film.
