Elves (1989)

1st View
Format: VHS
Venue: Alamo Ritz (Video Hate Squad)

One of the most inexplicable horror films I have ever seen. This was my first time attending at the Alamo Drafthouse's Video Hate Squad series. I will definitely be returning. This movie so boggled my already very boggleable mind so I decided to write it up for Junkfood Cinema's A Very Junkfood Christmas.

Never Too Young To Die (1986)

Revisit
Format: VHS
Venue: Rivendell

A personal favorite train wreck starring John Stamos as a teenage secret agent battling a transsexual terrorist played by former KISS frontman Gene Simmons. If that synopsis alone doesn't make you want to see this film, take a gander at the Junkfood Cinema article it earned with its absurdity.

Salem's Lot (1979)

1st View
Format: VHS
Venue: Rivendell

Hadn't seen this before. Despite being a made-for-TV horror flick, it's sufficiently creepy. Borrowing quite a bit from Nosferatu, Salem's Lot may take its time getting going but it's a strong vampire entry once it does. The ending feels downright Hammer in tone and set construction.

Black Roses (1988)

Love the hell out of this movie. Heavy metal horror is quickly becoming one of my favorite subgenres. It made such an impact on me that it was canonized in this week's Junkfood Cinema. Thrash and headbang your way through it.

Adventures in Babysitting (1987)

Revisit
Format: VHS
Venue: Kay-Kro's Backyard Drive-in

I used to watch this film incessantly as a kid. But it wasn't until I saw it outdoors in my good friend Kayla's backyard that it struck me how much I love it. It's just vulgar enough not to be too sugary but has enough heart and 80s charm to make it a crowd favorite. It isn't just nostalgic good, it's legitimately good.

In the sci-fi category. One of the single most boring movies I've ever struggled to sit through.

The Stepfather 3 (1992)

1st View
Format: VHS

I really expected this to be completely unwatchable drek, but was surprised to find it enjoyably bad. It's hampered right out of the gate by a lack of Terry O'Quinn, but the cheap plot device they use to explain the change in actors actually lends a bit of dark mythos to the character and makes him even more brutal. As silly as it is, the ending is fantastic and an adequate "high note" on which to end the franchise.

The Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy (1989)

1st View
Format: VHS
Venue: Rivendell

Given how much I love the first one, I had been wanting to dig into the sequels for a long time. Thanks to the limitless VHS selection at I Luv Video, getting my hands on the second installment was no difficult task. I found it to be strikingly decent, not quite as good as the first but not the complete free-fall in quality I had expected. The film was the subject of a very special Sunday Father's Day edition of Junkfood Cinema. Take a stab at it!

Gremlins 2 (1990)

Revisit
Format: VHS
Venue: Rivendell

Loved this film as a kid, still love it as an adult but for entirely new reasons. Joe Dante's harebrained love letter to Looney Tunes could not be more divergent in tone from the first, but that doesn't detract from my enjoyment. The Gremlins 2 NES game was the subject of the latest Motion Pixels at Ain't It Cool News. Don't read it after midnight!

Dressed to Kill (1980)

Watching Dressed to Kill directly after Blow Out was an amazing experience. De Palma wears his Hitchcock devotion on his sleeve but that does nothing if not enhance the film. Loved it, absolutely loved it. Fills me with eager anticipation for my continuing De Palma education.

Dragonslayer may be dry and a little rough around the edges but it has some interesting religious commentary and some of the very best practical dragon effects I have ever seen. Young Peter MacNicol creeps me out.

Dark Star (1974)

1st View
Format: VHS
Venue: Rivendell

Directed by John Carpenter, co-written by Dan O'Bannon, who also stars, Dark Star is a prime example of why copious amounts of cannabis and filmmaking do not mix. Boring, silly, and fraught with horrendous jokes that would only elicit a giggle from the incredibly stoned.
