Captain America Director's Cut (1990)

Venue: Alamo South Lamar (with Director Albert Pyun live)
I had seen the 90s Captain America before; was privy to its shortcomings and loved it regardless. What was unleashed upon us, the unsuspecting crowd sitting that night in naive anticipation in the theater, was something far worse than the film we knew and ironically loved. Albert Pyun's director's cut proves that his dismissal from the project at the behest of the studio was 100% warranted. I will never be able to truly communicate how inept and amateur this chore of a director's cut really is. Sufficed to say, I prefer my Captain America fighting the forces of evil over, say, sweeping the floors at a Gold's Gym. Not. Making. That. Up.

It's Alive (1974)

I have never been a big fan of this film, and tonight's screening did little to alleviate the boredom I typically feel while watching it. However, Jacob S Hall's poetic Terror Tuesday Report for Horror's Not Dead presented such an interesting prospective on the film, that I am compelled to give it another shot. Read the review that may have changed my mind.

The Stepfather (1987)

Quickly becoming one of my favorite slasher films with every repeat viewing. In honor of Father's Day, Terror Tuesday hosted a screening of this under-seen gem. My boy Brian Kelley provided the evening's wrapup over at Horror's Not Dead...and here's an article I wrote on the film for Hollywood.com.

They Live (1988)

Mondo Tees hosted their second special screening, this time making no effort to keep the featured film a secret. Sufficed to say, I was a much bigger fan of the choice of film this time around. I love They Live, such a weirdo of a movie with a hefty political subtext. Accompanying the film was a specially designed poster by none other than Shepard Fairey; the pop artist probably best known for his iconic bi-chromatic image of President Obama. Will be framing this and hanging it on my wall very soon.

Lamentably saturated by the decade in which it was made, and featuring one too many trying-on-clothes montages for my taste...that is, one. Does have a pretty brutally extreme ending, though.

Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)

Thought I had seen this, quickly became apparent that I had not. Most bargain-basementy of the franchise and the titular battle is far smaller-scale than its sensational title would suggest. It was more like the Battle for Ape County. Loads of fun though.

Tourist Trap (1979)

I was fortunate enough to be sitting in the balcony at The Ritz along with my brother and my cousin John to witness this gorgeous 35mm print. Maximum Overdrive (1986)

My good friends Aaron Morgan and Eric Vespe shot a short film last week here in town called No Way Out which, if my set visits are any indication, will be a fan-fucking-tastic piece of work. It stars another of my very good friends Mr. A.J. Bowen who is phenomenal in everything he does. To celebrate it's completion, Vespe planned a private screening at the Alamo of one of his multitude of film prints. I love Maximum Overdrive with a vengeance and now it seems so do many of my friends. Although I do find it a bit irritating that I have been raving about this film for well over two years and no one bothered to listen until this screening.
